Nikki Power: Okay, I know it stinks, I know it has (shall we say a pungent smell), I know the smell can stay on your fingers for hours not to mention your breath, but it's well worth any embarrassment you may face. Eating half a clove daily can help guard against cancer; some studies suggest it may also lower cholesterol levels and it is widely known for it's antiviral and anti-inflammatory benefits. Of course Eastern medicine has used garlic to treat heart and blood disorders for thousands of years and well the west is slowly catching on. In essence garlic is your hearts' best friend. It's like a body guard for the aorta. The aorta is a heart blood vessel that maintains blood pressure and flow while the heart is pumping. Research has shown that regular consumption of garlic slows the aging of the aorta and helps keep it flexible. We all know how important it is to control high blood pressure. Especially since it is an epidemic in the African American community. Garlic can help control our blood pressure by thinning our blood and preventing clots from forming. So if you have loved ones dealing with hypertension or high blood pressure, introduce them to the wonderful world of garlic. As always, check with your physician about any effect it could have on medications. You can sneak in this age old super food by Sautéeing chopped garlic and olive oil; rub toasted bread with a garlic clove, then top with tomatoes, onion and garlic to make bruschetta; poke holes in a chicken breast and fill with bits of garlic to flavor meat while cooking. But if your gangsta like me, just chop up a spoonful and down it!!!!! fyi (this method is not for the weak at heart). However you choose to add it in your diet, remember that raw is best. smooches!!!
